Powerful Women Own Super Bowl 50: Beyoncé and Lady Gaga’s Beauty Looks

The opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl isn’t just another show of patriotism — it’s also an opportunity for America’s boldest divas to make a statement. At Sunday night’s Super Bowl, Lady Gaga donned a glitzy red Gucci pantsuit — an homage to power suit-wearing female politicians like Hillary Clinton and Kirsten Gillibrand, perhaps — with matching shimmering red eyes and teased-up platinum hair. Her almond-shaped metallic blue nails completed the patriotic motif. And while all the attention was on her powerful voice, if you looked down at her feet, you would have seen half of a pair of Gucci Studded Leather Platform Pumps ($1,255) on one foot, along with a glittery blue platform pump for the other foot. Her huge diamond studs were by Lorraine Schwartz — making the entire ensemble an appropriately patriotic, high fashion performance look.

2016 halftime singer Beyoncé has also shared the honor of singing the Super Bowl national anthem, first in 2004 in a white skirt suit (Gaga may have drawn inspiration from Queen Bey’s look) and again in 2013 for the press conference — she later performed at the halftime show that year. For this year’s Super Bowl 50, Beyoncé’s third time performing at the major event, she was able to outshine even herself. After dropping her new single and a video called “Formation” on Saturday, it became pretty clear that the weekend belong to Bey. Like the new video, her Super Bowl performance of the single was feminine, political, and celebrated African American culture.

Beyoncé donned a bodysuit reminiscent of a costume Michael Jackson wore for his own 1993 Super Bowl performance, and her backup dancers had afros and wore uniforms resembling those of the Black Panthers. Bey stuck with her signature golden, glowing makeup, and her manicurist Lisa Logan applied OPI Nail Lacquer in Black Onyx ($10) with a matte top coat and a solo gold stud to each nail.

As for Queen Bey’s hair, is was big, long, honey blonde, and epically blew in the wind 100 percent of the time. The woman behind all the smoke and mirrors is stylist Kim Kimble, who is responsible for the hair on all of Beyoncé’s movie, television and music projects. She’s also worked with National Anthem singer Lady Gaga, but we’re guessing she had her hands tied doing the hair for Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance and “Formation” video, which featured eight very different and very elaborate hairstyles on Beyoncé alone, not to mention all of her dancers. “It’s my philosophy that healthy hair and great style should coexist,” says Kimble in a press release for her new curly hair products. “Thus, my products and tools are designed to work with a wide range of ethnic hair textures to create chic, yet manageable styles.” It makes sense that Beyoncé would be drawn to Kimble, and together they’ve created something beautiful. It’s safe to say that this year’s Super Bowl was dominated by powerful women.
