Over 100 People Are Suing Old Spice for Causing Chemical Burns
For years, consumers have complained online that Old Spice's scented brands of deodorant made them break out in painful rashes. One particularly aggrieved Old Spice user (a Virginia resident named Rodney Colley) spearheaded a class-action lawsuit against the brand that was officially filed March 11.
The suit claims over 100 people have been adversely affected by Proctor & Gamble's products and seeks up to $5 million in damages. You can browse horrifying images of their reactions here. The fallout from the product has afflicted both men and women alike. After coming into contact with an Old Spice deodorant, one gal claimed she had to visit an emergency room, where doctors told her she had a legitimate chemical burn.
Proctor & Gamble has kept relatively mum on the issue, mincing its words to convey it's still reviewing the case's particular claims (read: legitimacy) while reassuring the public the deodorant line is still totally safe.
This isn't the first time Proctor & Gamble's come under fire for - literally - getting under customers' skins. Back in 2010, angry moms and dads were convinced the company's Dry Max brand of diapers was giving their babies severe rashes "and other skin irritations." Much like the current complaints that the deodorants are the root cause of chemical burns, spokespeople for the company waved off the claims as "completely false rumors fueled by social media."
TBD how this class-action suit pans out. For now, warn your guy about the potential risks of these "Man Fresheners" and maybe avoid cuddling with him if you find any Old Spice products in his bathroom.
