Be careful with those at-home hair dyes — not only may they not deliver on their results, but also they may burn your scalp and body. As reported by The Dominion Post, Sheryl Smith of Wainuiomata, New Zealand was burned on her neck and torso after using Clairol Nice ‘n Easy boxed hair color, an at-home permanent hair dye that is used to give yourself highlights and lowlights. “We are doing a temporary product withdrawal of the specific product while we investigate with the supplier what’s going on,” a spokesperson for Countdown, a local supermarket chain that stocks the Clairol dye amongst other at-home products, told The Dominion Post. It was reported that multiple residents in the area had also complained of irritation and burns, including two women who spoke out after the story about Smith was published last Friday. “I feel like someone’s poured acid all over my head,” Smith said. Smith’s doctor diagnosed her burns as chemical in causation.

“We can also confirm that the quality of our products has not changed and continues to meet the highest safety and quality standards globally,” a representative from Proctor & Gamble, the distributor of the box color in New Zealand, said. "Generally, hair coloring products present no health risk for the consumer when used as directed on the product label.” The Nice ‘n Easy box includes three components: a Color Blend Formula, a Color Blend Activator, and a CC Color-Seal Conditioner. The Color Blend Activator is a peroxide-based bleach that lightens your hair while you are adding the highlight tones to it — and unfortunately, any ingredient that strips the color from your hair stands a risk of irritation on your skin, too. Manhattan-based colorist Lucille Javier at Sally Hershberger Downtown recommends cutting off a sample of your hair to test on before applying the boxed color on your entire head, but you should be worried about your skin, too. Yahoo Beauty reached out to Clairol for comment and did not receive a reply at press time.
