Matt Harvey Isn’t the Only Mets Player With Great Hair

Major League Baseball players – and all athletes, for that matter – have priorities: stay healthy, stay focused, and stay in shape. But, if we didn’t know any better, it seems (along with winning), hair is important to New York Mets’ players. Underneath baseball caps and batting helmets, their hair game is quite strong. Case and point: Jacob deGrom’s flowing mane, Noah Synergaard’s blonde locks, and Matt Harvey’s well kept cut.

Harvey, just 26, is a starting pitcher for the orange and blue-outfitted Queens based team. Also known as “The Dark Night,” the 2010 first round draft pick is dominating the baseball diamond. When he’s not playing or practicing at Citi Field, the Connecticut native is living life in the Big Apple – hanging with friends, playing golf and eating sushi.

These things all sounded like fun, so, as part of AXE’s Hair Prime event, we joined Harvey at NYC’s Chelsea Piers to hit some golf balls, and head to Whittemore House Salon for a quick AXE shampoo, before he headed out to Lure Fishbar to talk about career pressures, pre-game superstitions and plans post-baseball career. But first and foremost: we asked his hair.

Yahoo Beauty: Which team did you root for, before playing professionally?

Matt Harvey: I grew up a Yankee fan. The whole family was, so it was brought to me naturally. Wearing a Mets uniform and beating them is that more special.

What’s the best thing about being a Met?

Hearing the energy from the fans definitely makes playing here and winning here that much more special.

Who are your biggest fans?

My nephews and nieces are probably my biggest fans. They come wearing the Harvey jerseys every time. They’re the best. They’re definitely my fan club.

What is a day in your (gym) shoes like, during the season?

The baseball schedule’s so crazy. We pitch every five days. The day after I pitch is not only a recovery day, but it’s a “flush day,” as we call it. It’s a lot of sauna work. I’ll be in the sauna for 20 minutes, two times a day to sweat out all the bad stuff. I get on the treadmill for about a half hour, bike for a half hour, and then do a little bit of an upper body workout.

You have great hair, but what has been your worst hairstyle ever?

College was tough. I went to school in North Carolina, and it was so hot. A lot of the kids down there would literally shave everything off. I have dark features, dark eyebrows, a beard, mustache, everything. With a completely bald head and black facial hair, it didn’t look the greatest. Me bald, or me trying to grow it out, is no good.

How do you feel about teammate Jacob deGrom’s hair?

He’s pitching so well, and I had to keep up with that. Keeping up with his hair was my perfect way of becoming more in my prime.

Do you and deGrom have a hair rivalry going on?

Maybe him and Noah Syndergaard, with their long hair, but for me, I like to keep it clean and nice.

What are your favorite things to do in NYC?

I’m a member at Liberty National Golf course, which is in New Jersey, right outside the Holland Tunnel. I like to play golf as much as possible. Sushi. I like to go to dinners. I have a really close group of friends here in the city who have been here for many years.

What are your plans after baseball?

I was talking to my sister and my brother-in-law about that the other day. Being a golf pro and not doing anything, or going fishing, is very unrealistic, so maybe doing some broadcasting for sports. That would be pretty fun.
