Margot Robbie speaks out against that bizarrely sexist interview, but what she reveals makes us really sad

When Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie recently appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, the accompanying interview went viral for its bizarre, strangely sexist descriptions of Robbie’s appearance — not to mention some offensive statements about Australia, her home country. Now, Robbie has revealed her thoughts about the article, and she made an important (albeit extremely frustrating) observation in her response.

The VF article introduced Robbie, not with a description of her acting credits, but instead with the remark that she is “sexy and composed, even while naked…” The internet erupted with comments pointing out the article’s sexist tone as “creepy and lecherous.”

In an interview with the Australian program, The Project, Robbie has seconded some of these reactions, noting that she certainly picked up some weird vibes during the interview.

“I remember thinking, ‘That was a really odd interview, I don’t know how that’s going to come out’…Then when I read it and I was like, ‘Yeah, the tone of this is really weird, I don’t really know what he’s trying to get at or play at.”

Robbie’s next comments in her interview with The Project delve further into the sexist coverage of women in media when she admits that, as strange as she found the VF article, she didn’t expect it to become as controversial as it did — not when she is so used to reading so much blatantly violent and degrading language toward women:

“[I] didn’t expect there to be like an uproar about it at all… I’ve read far more offensive, far more sexist, insulting, derogatory, disgusting things on a daily basis. I don’t know maybe I’m desensitized to it now.”

Thanks for speaking up about your experiences as a woman in the media, Margot, and for reminding us that our world’s sexism runs deep. Let’s hope that as more industry professionals talk back, things will start to change.
