Kim Kardashian Drinks Charcoal — Should You?

Kim Kardashian is on a very public mission to reach her post-partum goal weight of 120 pounds, and she just let us in on another aspect of her journey: the contents of her fridge.

In many cases, you can correctly assume that your life doesn’t resemble Kim Kardashian’s whatsoever, but her taste for Diet Peach Snapple, sliced turkey breast, and mozzarella string cheese is surprisingly relatable. Then there’s the weird stuff: Kim’s go-to snacks like activated charcoal lemonade and fermented dairy probiotic. We’re not sure why Kim would want to replace plain old yogurt with this mystery dairy product, but to each her own. And what is activated charcoal? Are we wrong to scrape off the burnt parts of our toast? Should we commoners be consuming it?

“I’m not super into the whole ‘juicing’ craze, but Pressed Juicery’s fresh drinks taste amazing and make the perfect snack!” Kim wrote. “I’m currently into the Charcoal Lemonade, which is rich in vitamin C. I swear, when I drink it, I feel cleansed and energized throughout the day.”

And, a nutritionist confirms, it’s not just for Kim K and her fellow Atkins Diet worshippers. “Activated charcoal is great to include no matter what diet you follow,” Dorit Jaffe of Whole Healthy Glow tells Yahoo Beauty. “It’s made from coconut shells, petroleum, peat, coal, or wood. I prefer to invest in the activated charcoal made from coconut shells. The pores that are activated when creating the charcoal help to trap chemicals and impurities and prevent the body from absorbing them.”

Jaffe shares Kim’s aversion for juice cleansing, and thinks activated charcoal can serve as a good alternative if taken about once a week. “I’m not a huge fan of juice cleansing because it’s not sustainable and people tend to restrict themselves and then fall back into eating how they did before,” says Jaffe. “I like to take activated charcoal with probiotics after taking antibiotics from being sick, after eating food that upsets your stomach, or for an extra boost from time to time to get rid of toxins in the body… Activated charcoal is great to use to reduce inflammation in your digestive system that results in gas, bloating, and indigestion. It lowers cholesterol levels, can prevent hangovers when ingested at night after drinking, and treats constipation… It’s anti-inflammatory and cleansing.”

Okay, Kim, you’re not wrong to drink black lemonade.
