Kerry Washington Is Having ‘So Much Fun’ With Her Hair Lately

Another day, another hairstyle for Kerry Washington.

The Scandal star attended an event for Neutrogena (she’s an ambassador and creative consultant for the brand) on Wednesday in L.A. to unveil the new Hydro Boost Collection, and she was sporting a short haircut.

If you haven’t followed Washington’s red carpet looks as closely as we have, you’re probably thinking that the actress chopped off her brunette locks. But her blunt bob is actually made up of extensions similar to a style she wore at the Producer Guild Awards in January. The sharp cut looks fierce on Washington, and it accentuates her high cheekbones and pillowy lips.

Washington’s hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew uses her signature line of extensions, TSD Hair, to switch up her clients’ ’dos.

“Being that she just had her second baby, I definitely wanted to change up her look a lot and keep her modern and fresh,” Sturdivant-Drew tells Yahoo Beauty. “Her look is pretty classy, but I wanted to just modernize it but still in a sexy way. She is having so much fun with it and she loves to change it up. She’s a big part of it as well.”

Remember this goddess moment Washington had at the Emmys wearing big, curly hair? Sturdivant-Drew wanted to give her a “very bold” natural hairstyle that was different from the short, tighter Afros we’ve already seen on the red carpet.

What about her post-pregnancy appearance at the Critics Choice Awards, where she stepped out in messy waves and a fishtail braid? Her stylist put a different spin on the wet hair trend that Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen love to wear. “I just did the spring wave [extensions] but I also wanted it to look like she just chopped her hair. So I gave her a braid to the side,” she says.

Washington has also kicked things up a few notches by incorporating colored extensions, opting for color without the commitment, as seen at a Golden Globes after party.

And at the NAACP Image Awards.

“Kerry can wear any color,” says Sturdivant-Drew. “I love her in a medium brown and mix the blondes in it.”

Just a week ago, the 40-year-old turned heads at the Writers Guild Awards ceremony in L.A. with this textured lob. The inspiration: her black strapless corseted dress.

For anyone who wants to try hair extensions but remains on the fence, Sturdivant-Drew assures that “It’s OK, because so many people have extensions today and we don’t even know it.” She adds, “That’s the key: We don’t know. That’s what I want [for] it to be natural looking.”

For a bit of fullness, Sturdivant-Drew recommends adding two clip-in pieces in the center of your head from ear to ear.

Texture is also important. For a slight wave, the best solution from her line is a spring wave. If you have really curly, natural hair like Washington, the pro says to opt for a kinky curl or deep wave. Body wave extensions will instantly give life to straighter textures.

Sturdivant-Drew doesn’t know what hairstyle Washington will wear to the Oscars on Sunday, “but it will be something new and fresh!” And we’re sure she’ll look phenomenal.
