Celebrities are no strangers to bizarre beauty treatments, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that supermodel Kate Moss has developed a few unconventional beauty habits of her own.

In a recent interview with W Magazine, Moss disclosed that she dunks her face into ice a mound of ice cubes á la Faye Dunaway in the Joan Crawford camp classic biopic.

When asked who taught her the trick, she explained, “No one! I just watched Mommie Dearest! That’s what she does, isn’t it? I first thought, ‘That’s insane,’ then I was like ‘Hmmmm.’ Those old-school tricks work! With slices of cucumber, and you just put your face in it and you definitely wake up.”

Considering many people experience puffiness and a dull complexion early in the morning, Moss recommends using this trick every day to get blood pumping to your skin for a more “awake” look. Moss says she relies on it. “When I’m at work and it’s an early morning and you’re still asleep, really, then I do it,” she said. “It’s so good. It definitely works, because all the blood comes to the surface.”

Is this a good idea or just another crazy beauty hack without any truth behind it?

According to Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi — founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and assistant clinical professor at George Washington University Medical Center’s department of dermatology — it’s not entirely a bad idea. “It may temporarily ‘wake up the face’ to reduce under-eye swelling,” she explains. However, Dr. Tanzi confirms, no long-term benefits have been proven.

So give the old ice trick a try if you’re interested, but keep in mind that there are plenty of skincare products and other beauty hacks that can have a similar effect (even a cold spoon on under-eye circles can do the trick). As for less uncomfortable beauty moves that Kate swears by? The surprisingly simple step of using sunscreen and lip balm. Now that sounds more like the rest of us!
