Jade Liner: The New Beauty Staple According to Beyoncé and Karlie Kloss

Sir John deemed jade the shade du jour for the Met Gala—applying eyeliner reminiscent of the precious green stone on the likes of Beyoncé and Karlie Kloss. Prized above silver and gold in Chinese culture and praised by Confucius as a symbol of virtue, justice, loyalty, chastity, and truth, it seems only apropos that the pro swipe it across the lids of fashion and music royalty.

“We used liner only on the top, which makes you look fresh,” said Sir John of Beyoncé’s “severely” winged eyes reminiscent of an anime character. “Asia is so youth-obsessed with their skincare that we wanted to give a nod to that.” To open up the eye, without giving her a “made-up” shadow look, and infuse some ’60s flavor, the face painter rimmed the upper lashes with a mint green liner before layering on a precise band of black.  (For a similar hue, try By Terry Ombre Blackstar Eyeshadow in Fizzy Jade.) Brows were bleached slightly for contrast and L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator (out in July) was dabbed on cheeks then mixed with lotion and applied to limbs. “It’s transfer resistant, so it doesn’t rub off on your dress,” he said.

For Kloss, Sir John elongated the super’s top lash lines with L’Oréal Paris Silkissime Eyeliner in Green Ivy, then swept the same shade from beneath the pupil out toward the end of the eye. “This makes eyes look bigger and brighter but doesn’t marginalize the space,” he said. For more volume and definition, Smokissime Powder Eyeliner Pen in Black was worked into the roots of the top lashes before six individual falsies were strategically adhered to each eye for fullness. To achieve a “post-SoulCycle situation,” the pro used the True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in Ice on top of the cheekbones and Golden in the contour for a classic Versace glow that matched her designer gown. “Veer away from shimmer in the T-zone,” he warned. “Don’t bring the highlight too far into the center of the cheek—it looks great when it’s on the side of the face, but once it’s on the apple it looks like shiny, oily skin no matter who applies it.” For lips “reminiscent of Kylie Jenner,” he overdrew her pout slightly before filling it in with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Lipcolor in Everlasting Caramel.

In addition to playing brilliantly into the theme of tonight’s event without looking costumey, Sir John admitted that green just so happens to be his favorite color. After seeing tonight’s jade-inspired looks, we have a feeling the shade will be adored (and adopted) by many.
