Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, looks like she’s embracing gray hair at 33 year old. Middleton, who is seven months pregnant, was spotted with visible gray roots while out in West Midlands yesterday. If we had to guess, we would say she is passing on hair color due to her pregnancy, and she isn’t the only star to go natural while expecting—actress Blake Lively let her brown roots show while pregnant with her first child earlier this year (and of course, she still looked amazing).

According to the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists, the amount of exposure, the timing during pregnancy, and the frequency of use are important factors to consider when it comes to hair treatments. You should also consult your health care provider if you have specific concerns. While there is no concrete evidence to support a link between hair dye and harm to the fetus, it is recommended by doctors to wait at least three months before coloring your hair, to avoid contact with ammonia.

If you are considering coloring your hair while pregnant, Reyad Fritas, artistic director of Fekkai 5th Avenue, says that highlights are your best option. “The dye doesn’t touch the skin, is ammonia-free, and there is less oxidation to breath in versus a [full] color,” says Fritas. For gray coverage, Fritas suggests using a gentle semi-permanent and ammonia-free dye. “These do not cover 100% of grays but still create a natural look,” he says.
