Instagram's Watermelon Makeup Takes Summer to a Literal Level

Makeup artists on Instagram are a little too excited that summer days filled with sunshine, laying by the pool, and watermelon are just around the corner. How could we tell? They are bringing the juicy pink-and-green fruit to their eyes and lips — thanks to makeup, of course. (No actual watermelons were harmed in the making of the looks you're about to see.) We aren't complaining, though. These watermelon looks are getting us in the summer spirit and making us seriously crave a slice or two. With all the festivals coming up, we're definitely keeping this in mind. (And once we wash off our watermelon, we can treat our skin to Glow Recipe's new Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask.)

Ragnhild Skjeldnes, a 23-year-old makeup artist from Norway, indulged in some watermelon eye makeup at her sister's suggestion. "Watermelon is my absolute favorite fruit," she tells Allure. "I can finish a whole watermelon by myself, so my little sister suggested that I should do a makeup look based on it, and I loved the idea." Honestly, same. Skjeldnes decided to make her lower lash lines the rind of the watermelon and her upper eye lids into the pink part.

To create the watermelon makeup, Skjeldnes began by taping off the triangular shape of the slices on her lids. "I started with one piece of Scotch tape from the outer corner of my eye and placed it with an about 45 degree angle on the eyelid," she explains. "Then, I did the same from the inner corner, so they created a triangle shape on the lid." Next, she filled them in with Colourpop's Ultra Blotted Lip in Doozy on a blending brush. "When using liquid lipstick on your eyes, start with a small amount. You probably need less product than you think," Skjeldnes recommends. "If you don't have a liquid lipstick in a shade similar to this, you can easily use eyeshadow instead." To make the seeds, she drew on teardrop shapes with a black liquid liner.

As for the rind, she used the bright green shade from NYX's Brights Ultimate Shadow Palette. "This is my favorite affordable colorful palette for creative looks," she adds. Then, she coated her lashes with green liquid liner. The final step was removing the tape to reveal clean edges. "If you want the watermelon to be juicy, you can just add some gloss on top," Skjeldnes suggests.

Lip art is an additional watermelon makeup option. It's a little less wearable for ever day, but just as fun.

For this look, Amaia Mendo, better known as @conextradequeso on Instagram, started off by mixing Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks in Bachelorette (a deep fuchsia) and Outlaw (a brick red) to create the perfect watermelon red shade. Then, she swiped the combo onto her lips. Once the lipstick was completely dry, Mendo smeared Too Faced's Glitter Glue onto her lower lip with a thin pencil brush to create a tacky surface. "Then comes the fun part: the glitter!" she says. Using the same pencil brush, she placed on green glitter, specifically the one called Rick from Glitter Palace. The seeds were also from Glitter Palace — Jiji this time. "The last part, and the messiest one, is the gloss," Mendo says. "I just made sure everything was set, and the glitter wasn't going anywhere. I used a flat brush to apply the gloss. And that's it!"

For a more matte look on just your lower lip, you can take cues from Katie Buck-Niehaus.
