A Huge Avalanche Trapped a California Family Inside Their Home

From Country Living

As winter storms continue to wreak havoc across the country, let's all be grateful that we didn't have to deal with this mess.

After nearby crews set off controlled avalanches in the Alpine Meadows area of Tahoe City, in Northern California, homeowner Steven Siig captured the aftermath and shared the images on Facebook, CBS Sacramento reported. His home was covered in 15-20 feet of snow-there was so much, it even broke through his front door.

Officials warned residents in the area that crews were conducting controlled avalanches to avoid dangerous conditions due to heavy snowfall, but the homeowner didn't realize their house would be completely covered. "We live in an avalanche zone that we're fully aware of. We work very tightly with the Alpine Meadows ski patrol," Steven told reporters. "Today's avalanche ran fast and hard, hit us, blew the front door open, and went up and over our house."

The Siig family, including their three children and German Shepherd, were sitting at home when the avalanche occurred, according to The Washington Post. Thankfully, the ski patrol appeared just minutes after the massive snow fall to help dig the family out.

"We basically live in an igloo," Steven's wife, Margaret said. Now, the family can get in and out of their home, but the house is still blanketed in snow. Yikes!
