Our hearts love beach. Our hair? Not so much. Between the sun and the salt water, as the tongue-twister goes, Sally’s strands took a beating down by the seashore. After one of our favorite stylists, Marcus Francis, posted a tip to Instagram this morning about how to keep your hair happy at the beach, we started thinking—OK, dreaming—of ways to enjoy the surf without it taking a toll on our heads. Here, six ways to keep your hair pretty all summer long.

1. Francis’ advice: Spray your hair with water mixed with a spoonful of coconut oil and conditioner before you soak up the sun. Your porous areas will soak it in, protecting delicate strands.

2. Make sure to use a hair product with UV protectant in it—especially if you color your hair. You don’t want the sun to fade all your hard work. One to try: Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray ($8.50, drugstore.com).

3. Put some love back into your salt-dried hair with a conditioning mask in your next shower (and then once a week after that). The one we’re singing ballads about these days is the deeply moisturizing Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment ($42, sephora.com).

4. Don’t forget to hit your hair part with sunscreen. Your scalp is covered in skin, people—it can burn too! Here’s an easy way to protect it without getting your hair all gunky.

5. And speaking of your scalp, you may also want to consider an exfoliating scalp treatment like Restorsea Revitalizing Scalp Treatment ($150, restorsea.com). It’ll provide a little post-outdoor TLC by removing dead skin cells, dirt, and sebum that can accumulate while you’re out there and clog hair follicles.

6. If you did all of the above and you’re still finding your hair a little cranky, reach for a primer like R+Co One Prep Spray ($20, randco.com) before you style. As we’ve told you before, these formulas will help hydrate and repair, in addition to adding softness and shine.
