How to Get Dream Girl Hair

Brittany Sullivan has mastered the art of lived in, effortless, dream girl hair. A quick scroll through her Instagram feed reveals a slew of gorgeous girls with even more gorgeous manes. So we tracked down the Mane Master to let us in on what makes the perfect dream girl hair…
“Dream girl hair can have as many interpretations as there are dreamers out there. But, for me right now, my signature Dream Girl hair is romantic, soft, and pretty but undone and a little messy in all the right ways.
Something like this is definitely meant for the girl who’s not afraid of a little adventure. You don’t want every hair perfectly in place. The formula for creating it is all about keeping it spontaneous and perfectly imperfect.
To create my version of Dream Girl hair, I begin by prepping with a heat protectant like Bumble and Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil.
Next I section off horizontally about five equal sections. For the bottom-most section, I use a hair straightener to create loose waves in 1.5″ sections. I do this quickly, forming the hair in an S-like shape and holding it in the straightener flat for just a second. The shapes don’t have to be super prominent, just a little bend here and there – super subtle.
Next I pinch just a tiny bit of Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine onto the ends and then spray a quick pass of Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray on that section and move on to the one above it. I create a different texture on this section by using a 1.5″ curling iron and wrapping hair in alternating directions. I then use the Brilliantine and Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray again and move up to the next section where I’ll again use the straightener technique.
I continue creating different textures in each section, and trade to a smaller 1.25″ barrel curling iron as I move up the sections. The key to this look is alternating between the tools to continue to build different types of texture – this helps achieve the perfect soft lil bed head, but more like an afternoon catnap than a hard sleep.
For hair that loses curl a bit easier, I spray a light dusting of hairspray like Kenra Volume Spray 25 and twist and loosely clip the freshly textured pieces aside while they cool and set. They don’t need to be kept clipped for long, just until you’ve finished the section.
For the face-framing pieces, I usually wrap hair outward, away from the face. Next, I give the roots a tiny shake of Redken’s Powder Grip 03 and give the crown a little tousle to build volume and add a bit of the pillow-hair flyaways. To complete, a little shake all around to loosen the shape and voila – soft, feminine, perfectly undone dream girl hair!”
