How Old Do You Look?

Confession: the Yahoo Beauty staff has spent most of Friday afternoon uploading selfies into How-Old.net, a new site that “guesses” your age and gender based on how you look in photos. Noël Duan, our Assistant Editor, uploaded a photo of herself from age 21 that came back with her age guessed at five years old. Yes, five years old. I uploaded two photos of myself, both where I was wearing red lipstick, and both received a guess of 19 years old. (Without lipstick I got 25, but hey, I’ll take it!) Our intern, Laura Cates, is 22 years old, but often mistaken for 18. She uploaded a photo that came back with 29 slapped on it.

So, how does the site work? A group of engineers playing around with Microsoft’s new Face detection API created the site to demonstrate new software — little did they know it would quickly become a source of entertainment (and judgement). The software looks at face attributes (eyes, nose, mouth, brows), pose, gender, and age.

While it might not always be incredibly accurate, the site is addictive to say the least. I’m planning on wearing a lot more red lipstick.
