How Emma Stone's Team Gets Her Red-Carpet Ready
After working together for over six years, Stone’s team is “like a really great rock band,” says Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. “It’s not the same when one of us is missing.” They revealed their red-carpet-prep routine and what it’s like eating, traveling, and cracking jokes with Stone. (Yes, she’s just as hilarious as you think.)

WHERE IT ALL STARTED
Way, way before Birdman orThe Help or Andrew Garfield’s charming accent, Stone was just a teenager playing the awkwardly nerdy Natalie inThe House Bunny. And the premiere for that film—she was only 19 years old at the time—marked her team’s very first collaboration. “I said, ‘We need to do red lips,’” says Goodwin. “Up until that point, she was a smoky-eye girl, and I remember thinking, You’re going to look amazing; trust me. And she did. Right from the start, we were like, OK, this girl is going to be fun.”

CHOOSING THE OUTFIT
When we imagine all the things we’d wear to glamorous events in our never-gonna-happen dreamland, they basically look like every single outfit Stone has ever worn. “It starts with the clothes,” says stylist Petra Flannery. “I’m all about style.com to see what’s on the runway. That’s what I love about Emma: She’s into fashion, and she likes to take risks.” During the overseas tour for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 last year, Stone wore everything from a boxy Saint Laurent menswear suit during the day to a romantic yellow Atelier Versace gown at night. “The Versace team flew to London to make sure the fit was perfect,” says Flannery. “Those moments are amazing.”
PLANNING THE LOOK
Because slapdash makeup and actual, knotted bed head don’t exactly go with couture, once Flannery and Stone have chosen the outfits for a press tour, Flannery gives the rest of the team a preview. “When I think of a hair idea, I show everyone inspiration pictures on my iPad so they see what I have in mind,” says hairstylist Mara Roszak. “We use a lot of visual references, and there have been many plane rides talking about what we want to do.”
PREPPING IN PARIS
If you’re going to spend a ton of time with people in close quarters, it might as well be in Paris. One of the team’s favorite looks for Stone was for The Amazing Spider-Manpremiere in the city. That “was our film-noir moment, with dark-cherry lips and waves," says Goodwin. "And Petra poured Emma into this gorgeous Gucci dress," says Roszak. "We were only there for 24 hours, so we filled the room with pastries—Em loves this crepe place called Breizh Café in Le Marais—and had this wonderful moment getting her ready," says Goodwin.

EXPLORING THE FOOD SCENE
It’s easy to stay holed up in a hotel room when you’re on a whirlwind film premiere tour. But this team isn’t afraid to wander out in search of good food. “I’m the walking Zagat of the group. Everywhere we go, I have to find out where we’re going to eat,” says Goodwin. “So in Singapore, I researched all the best food stalls to have Hainanese chicken.” On a one particular stop in Hamburg, “we were eating waffles, then wiener schnitzel. It’s so much fun that they let me lead them around to these crazy places.”
HOW THEY STAY SANE
"We’ve traveled the world ten times over," says Goodwin, "so there have been times when we’re all exhausted and times when we’re all on fire." But there’s one element that’s always present: "Our sense of humor," says Flannery. "We love Saturday Night Liveskits.” And “we’re always laughing and watching funny YouTube videos,” says Roszak.
THE WOW MOMENT
The night Stone wore a green Valentino gown to the Venice Film Festival “was the night we revealed Emma’s new haircut," says Roszak. "We had discussed cutting it into a bob for a while. It was just finding the time to do it when we would all be together and she didn’t have a project. She was really excited.” “It was a perfect moment,” recalls Flannery.
