The Secret Behind J.Lo’s Glow

Until scientists figure out a way to bottle J. Lo’s iconic other worldly glow, we’re taking these tips from Scott Barnes, a celebrity makeup artist who has worked with Lopez many times over the years. We recently met up with the pro at a fete to celebrate Alcon Air Optix Colors #LiveinColor campaign and he offered a few pointers to recreate that luminous skin.

The first step is to ensure skin doesn’t look cakey after applying foundation; to that end, use a face oil (we like Josie’s Maran’s version, $48; sephora.com) to first give your complexion a dewy texture. Rather than rubbing it on with fingers and creating an oil slick on your face, Barnes buffs in the oil with a soft brush (try Sonia Kashuk Multipurpose brush, $14; target.com). He says it creates “a soft,  diffused finish.”

Now remember that translucent powder can act like kryptonite to a radiant complexion, Barnes says. So rather than dust it over your entire face: “Just apply a little bit over grease-prone areas, like the T-zone.” Next, opt for a cream or liquid highlighter with a faint shimmer (like Barnes’s Body Bling, $42; dermstore.com) and apply it to the tops of cheekbones, down the nose and on the cupids bow. Avoid products that have chunky glitter, which can look too obvious.
