Hat Tip to Olivia Wilde for this Simple Hat Trick

As a kid I was obsessed with hats. From ‘80s Debbie Gibson-style felt wide brim hats and ‘90s Blossom-style fold-up hats to Yankees baseball hats to Parisian berets, I was known as a hat girl. But as I got older I completely gave up on hats, weary of looking dorky or obnoxious and completely confused about how to style my hair while wearing them.

And then along came Olivia Wilde effortlessly pairing a cool hat with a casual braid and a simple white tee and jeans late this summer. I realized I’ve been completely overthinking it! The whole point of looking cool in a hat is throwing it on and NOT planning everything out. But the control freak in me decided Wilde’s look might be an easy one to copy. Here’s how.

Start with dry hair, preferably hair that hasn’t been freshly washed — aside from your hat covering up oily roots, your hair has more texture when it’s not squeaky clean. If you can’t resist shampooing, add in a texture-enhancing product like Redken Braid Aid 03 ($25) or Amika Un.Done Texture Spray ($24) for added grip. Part hair to one side and braid loosely over one shoulder, allowing face-framing layers to fall out as they may. Fasten a few inches from the ends of your hair with a clear elastic to not take away from the aesthetic. Add your brimmed head gear of choice, and off you go. The style will only look cooler as the day goes on, so stop focusing on your hair and spend your time doing something more productive. Like hat shopping. I’ve already got my eye on this Rag & Bone Floppy Brim Fedora.
