Whether you’re a celebrity or not, the easiest way to change up your look is by adding bangs. However, there’s no need to actually head into the salon for an impromptu chop — just take a look at Gabrielle Union, who attended the Birth of a Nation premiere with what looks like her natural hair styled to mimic the look of bangs.

Union dressed like a fashion-forward bride in a white lace dress while attending the premiere, but instead of wearing a veil, the actress styled her hair in a glam updo. The look, styled by celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims, was a totally different approach for Union, since she’s typically seen sporting beach waves while making Hollywood appearances.

Surprisingly, Union isn’t the only celebrity to take a swing at wearing fake bangs recently. Both Karlie Kloss and Chrissy Teigen have experimented with bangs on their own (but soon afterward removed them) as well.

We spoke with got2b and Smooth ‘N Shine celebrity hairstylist Sims about how he created the look, and he explained, “Because of the content of the film, Gabrielle wanted to create a style that exemplified texture, structure and strength. To accomplish, I parted her natural hair in three sections – top, middle and back. I then used Smooth ‘N Shine Edge Tamer on each section, brushed through and secured with elastic bands. Next, I pinned long textured extensions to the top and middle sections. Lastly, I looped a section of the textured hair around Gabrielle’s hairline to create a faux bang while twisting and looping the rest of the hair in non directional knots and twists…: I then s cured w hair pins.

We also wanted to know if we could fake a bang at home, and Sims says yes, explaining, “Most faux bangs have clips in them so it’s as easy as clip n go, although they work really well with top knots and pony tails.” He also offers a little advice about making them work, saying “Make sure the bangs are centered. Also, try to purchase bangs that have an artificial scalp. The more realistic, the better!”
