First lady Michelle Obama is no stranger to being at the top of best-dressed lists when she steps out for public appearances, but it was her bombshell hair and glowing skin that mesmerized at the state dinner held in honor of Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday night. Her makeup was kept light and natural, with her shoulder-length hair falling in big, loose barrel curls around her face. To recreate her gorgeous look, we spoke with makeup artist Vanessa Ungaro of Lauren + Vanessa, celebrity facialist Ildi Pekar, and Nathan Alan, stylist and owner of Blo Blow Dry Bar in Boston, for their expert advice.

First, to create a smooth base for a perfect makeup application, Pekar recommends applying a DIY face mask for dewy skin. Warm two teaspoons of honey, add one teaspoon of cottage cheese, and apply for 20 minutes before rinsing. Once removed, skin will be refreshed, hydrated, and ready for the next step.

Once skin is prepped, Ungaro suggests using both an illuminator and a foundation to achieve a sheer, dewy finish. “Mix a drop of Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation Illuminator ($39) in with Koh Gen Do Manifest Liquid Foundation ($62) and apply on the skin,” she explains. “This high-definition mineral foundation has a sheer finish and is very moisturizing, which is perfect for that fresh look.” Once the makeup has been set, press the illuminator onto the bridge of the nose and high part of the cheekbones for an extra glow. To top off the look, swipe on mascara and a few coats of nude lip gloss.

As for Obama’s stunning hair, focus on creating volume. Alan confirms that the look isn’t too difficult to recreate. “To achieve the beautiful, voluminous curl we saw on the first lady, blow out the hair and then set it with pin curls,” he said. “Next, apply product that achieves hold with movement, like Unite Texturiza Dry Finishing Spray ($35), and use a 1.25-inch curling iron to curl half-inch subsections. Finally, tease hair at the root for long-lasting hold.”

Now all you have to do is score an invite to the White House.
