Fall Beauty Trend: Next Day Eyeliner

Sleeping in your makeup has always been one of the biggest beauty faux pas. Just about every makeup artist and dermatologist will tell you taking your makeup off before bed is the key to great skin (except maybe Charlotte Tilbury, who told us that she sleeps in her makeup). Every once and a while though, it happens — we’ve all been there. But this isn’t about making you feel guilty for those times when your head hits the pillow with a full face of makeup, because sometimes, it looks really, really good the next day. That smudged, slept in eyeliner look started popping up on the fall runways at shows like Versace, Tory Burch, and Diane Von Furstenberg and the good news is, it’s easier thank you think to replicate on a clean face.

The key product for getting this slept in look? According to makeup artist Deanna Melluso, who was behind the makeup on model Stacey Louise Grant above, it’s all about a good kohl liner. Her favorite is Guerlain The Original Creamy Khôl Me Kajal Eyeliner ($40) because it’s an intense black. “To achieve this effect, take the eyeliner and draw a straight line on your lashline, starting at the outer corner and working your way in,” says Melluso. “It doesn’t have to be perfect.” Once you’ve got that line, go and do the same thing along your waterline.

Now it’s time to smudge. Melluso likes using Homeoplasmine (the French pharmacy do-it-all ointment) because it helps to move the liner around and soften the color or Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream for more of a wet look (perfect for a night out). Using a cotton swab or your ring finger, smudge the liner around the lashline. Afterwards, Melluso says you can go back with more liner to make the look more intense. Now you really have no excuse for not taking off your makeup.
