Fall Beauty Trend: Metallic Eye Makeup Three Ways

Metallic eye makeup is gorgeous for parties, and a staple during the holiday season, but could it become a daily go-to? If the fall runways are any indication, the answer is yes. Mara Hoffman and Marchesa utilized bronze eyeshadow, Zac Posen showcased cool silver eyeliner, and Tadashi Shoii decorated lids with gold glitter. On retail shelves, you’ll also find an abundance of colorful metallic liners and shadows, too. If these looks sound outlandish, trust when we say metallics can be worn in many scenarios besides New Year’s Eve. We enlisted makeup artist Deanna Melluso, who works with celebs like Olivia Wilde and Natasha Lyonne, to create three metallic eye looks from barely there to ultra glam. Here’s how to test drive the metallic look.

Simple gold liner makes a big impression
Metallic eyeliner are in abundance, but if wielding a pencil isn’t your thing, Melluso says she actually prefers using a cream metallic shadow. “I like to make it really creamy so it glides on but not too much where it will run,” she says. “You can start from the outer corner in and draw the line as desired.” She likes topping that off with The Precision Liner from Kevin Aucoin ($34) right on the lash line, and a kohl liner in the water line.

Try a playful metallic cat eye
Melluso says the key for achieving this rose gold cat eye is prepping with a good primer — she likes Christian Dior Backstage Eye Prime ($28). “I use a wet shadow for this,” says Melluso. “Dampen a Nars #47 Angled Eyeliner Brush ($28) and Chanel Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush #13 ($28) with water. Draw the line from the outer corner in on the lash line and than you want to go over the color two to three times to achieve a more intense look.” Like bronze, rose gold is fairly neutral and really pops on all skin tones.

Go bold or go home
You may not want to wear a wash of metallic color across your lid every day, but it’s a stunning look for evening or events. Best of all, it’s simple to achieve and makes such a big impact. For this purple metallic look, Melluso used Dior Addict Fluid Shadow in Cosmic ($32). “This one you want to start from the lashline and bring the color up,” she says. “This product is high shine and high metallic — love, love, love this product — although, you need to work quickly. I found it best to use my ring finger to apply by tapping the color on the eye.” Top your lashes with mascara and you’re ready to go!
Selecting the right shade
Ready to dip your toe in to the metallic trend? Melluso says bronze tones are universally flattering. “The Tom Ford’s Cognac Sable Eye Color Quad ($80) has four luxurious metallic shades that come in gold, bronze, dark metallic burgundy, and dusty gold — I can’t say enough things about this palette.” She says if you’re brave enough to try bold colors like reds and blues, you can apply just a wash of the color with a light blending brush so the color is not so strong. “If you want go more dramatic, take a bit of water, moisten a synthetic brush, and dampen the color,” says Melluso. “It will become more intense and the metallic will pop.” The makeup artist says a simple application key. “Avoid going too heavy by over applying or layering the colors too much,” she says. Also important: Keeping your skin matte. “People should be focusing on your gorgeous metallic eyes and not on your glossy face.”
