When we learn about the “secret” skin care routines of Hollywood’s biggest stars, it usually doesn’t help, because they have access to some of the best dermatologists and top-notch treatments in the world. Though this is true for most, one would be surprised by how many celebrities rely on over-the-counter products or natural remedies.

One celeb who comes to mind is actress and best-friend-in-our-heads Olivia Munn. Yes, she is confident and comfortable in the skin she’s in now, but the Ocean’s Eight star has had her share of acne breakouts like many of us.

“I was on this medicine a few years back that gave me cystic acne out of nowhere, and it was like out of everything I tried nothing would make it go away,” Munn told Yahoo Beauty at a New York City pop-up event promoting ProactivMD a new system formulated with adapalene, an FDA-approved nonprescription acne ingredient. “I tried everything from acupuncture to peels and nothing really worked. It was there for so long, and it was painful. It lasted for almost a year. Then, I was introduced to Proactiv, gave it a try, and it finally went away. The products I used cured it, when everything else failed me.”

It’s hard to tell from the looks of Munn’s many stunning photo opps that she has ever gone through anything acne-related. However, her honesty and transparency humanize her in a way that fans can’t get enough of.

But a physical feature that is easily noticeable from her up-close-and-personal shots are her small clusters of freckles, which amazingly enough, she has never had to cover up for the sake of a movie role. “I see them all the time, but I don’t really cover them up. There have been photo shoots where they end up covering them up, and I don’t like it when they do,” said Munn. “Some of my freckles are actually sun spots, but I use the dark spot correcting pads, which are great because they help your skin have an even tone.”

Whether you are a teenager or an adult dealing with acne for the first time, it can be especially challenging when you are unsure of how to properly treat your skin. Munn’s biggest piece of advice: take action sooner rather than later. “You want to fix the problem faster instead of sitting around trying to come up with your own concoctions or hiding away because firstly, you are missing out on a lot of life, and secondly, you don’t want to scar your skin to the point where it can’t really be reversed.”

Munn reflected on her very own acne scars experience, explaining, “I used to have this scar on my chin that I just constantly kept putting concealer over. It’s a small thing, but if I wasn’t messing around with it, it could have been fixed. So do what you can now to take the opportunity to fix it, because it sucks to have to shy away from things because of acne, and there’s no reason why everyone shouldn’t have great skin.”
