Elle Fanning is a beauty chameleon, but she tends to keep her hair looking simple and sweet. Note that simple does not mean boring. Like a fine restaurant with just a few things on the menu, Fanning’s minimal red carpet hair looks are flawlessly executed every single time.

Monday’s Live by Night Los Angeles premiere was no exception. Fanning’s pin-straight blond locks looked effortless, but we know there’s a perfectionist behind the style. Her go-to hairstylist, Jenda, created the sleek, ’70s-inspired look, and she’s perfected the ear tuck for Fanning before.

We all know that tucking your hair behind your ears can be trickier than it sounds…

…so here are a few helpful tips:

Prep with a heat protector like R+Co’s One Prep Spray and straighten with a flat iron. Create a perfect center part by aligning your comb with the bridge of your nose, and section off the pieces you will tuck behind your ears by parting from crown to top of the ear and pulling the hair to the front.

Apply a few drops of hair oil through the length of the two front pieces — we like Marula’s Light Hair Treatment & Styling Oil — then add a spritz of medium-hold hairspray to tame your baby hairs and give strands some tack. Then comb hair away from face and secure behind ears using crisscrossed bobby pins, being sure to leave slack in the hair for a look that’s more ’70s than Kim K.

Fanning completed the look with soft, sheer makeup and bright eyes. A subtle swipe of gold-toned RMS Living Luminizer ties into the bright metallics on her lids from Charlotte Tilbury‘s Luxury Eye Palette in Legendary Muse. A touch of Glossier’s Generation G lipstick in Like is Fanning’s cool girl hallmark.
