Eating Healthy During Fashion Week

To say that fashion week is a marathon is a total understatement. Designers, models, casting agents, publicists, and editors spend eight solid days running around New York City, which means many meals are had backstage at a show or on the go—I know I’m guilty of grabbing a $1 slice between shows or filling up on a sugary snack while taking a quick pitstop at my desk. One restaurant is setting out to change the way the industry eats during fashion week (because yes, we do eat, and food has a major impact on our skin).

This is the second season that farm-to-counter restaurant, Dig Inn, has joined forces with the Council of Fashion Designers of America Health Initiative to provide healthy food options backstage and at castings for designers like Suno and Diane von Furstenberg. Instead of bags of chips and pre-packaged snacks backstage, you’ll find roasted Brussels sprouts, sautéed kale, and naturally-raised flank steak.

Dig Inn founder and CEO Adam Eskin is hoping to help take the guesswork out of healthy eating backstage. “I think that trade off has always been that if I want something to be convenient, it probably has to be bad for me,” says Eskin. “Whether we’re serving food in our restaurants or we’re delivering a catering package, we’re trying to not have to make that compromise.”

From what we saw backstage at the Diane von Furstenberg show, trays of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins were more than well received. In the long term, Eskin hopes that this healthy eating mentality will trickle down to those who look up to the industry. “If we can get everyone on board in the fashion industry, and everyone says ‘yes, this is cool, it’s convenient, it tastes really great, and it’s actually good for me,’ it’s a total win.”
