On New Year's Eve, a man in Northern Michigan named Bob was watching football with his faithful golden retriever, Kelsey, when he decided to step outside to get some more wood for the fireplace. Suddenly, the very worst happened: he slipped and fell on the snow, breaking his neck. He cried out for help, but his nearest neighbor lived a quarter-mile away, so he remained on the ground, unable to move, and in nothing but his pajamas and slippers. He then lost consciousness as the night temperature plummeted to 24 degrees.

Luckily, however, he had his guardian angel by his side: Kelsey.

"She kept barking for help but never left my side," Bob told Fox News. "She kept me warm and alert. I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive."

His neighbor finally found him at 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Day, and he was taken to the local hospital. Bob had severe hypothermia (his core body temperature was under 70 degrees), and he had an irregular heartbeat and a C4-C5 disc herniation that was causing leg paralysis.

Surprisingly, however, he didn't suffer from any frostbite, which he attributes to Kelsey keeping him warm.

Doctors worked round the clock to stabilize him, and though Bob will still need some physical therapy to get back on his feet, the neurosurgeon who treated him at McLaren Hospital said that he has already regained use of his limbs. All thanks to the loyal friend who wouldn't leave his side or stop barking for help for 20 hours through the freezing night.
