Demi Lovato Perfectly Matched Her Lipstick and Eye Shadow: Get Her Look

It’s not unusual for a celebrity to step out in public with an enviable and glam makeup look. But singer and actress Demi Lovato often takes it to the next level, taking beauty risks we almost always want to try ourselves. Lovato debuted a recent look via Instagram, in which she showed off a berry-colored lipstick with matching eye shadow. Yes, matching eye shadow.

Multiple makeup artists recommend against such a makeup combination (as does your mother, most likely), so it can be hard to find a way to pull this off without looking clownlike. Thankfully, makeup artist Vanessa Ungaro of Lauren + Vanessa cosmetics spoke to Yahoo Beauty to set the record straight about how anyone can wear a look like Demi’s:

The shadow must be a few shades lighter than the lipstick color.

Although both her eyes and lips sport the same berry color, the shades and pigmentation are noticeably different in order to soften the overall appearance. “You want to give the look dimension rather than a hard block coloring,” explains Vanessa.

Diffuse the eye shadow before applying.

Instead of packing on the eye shadow pigment using a shading brush, apply it with a fluffier brush, using lighter strokes as to not overdo this look. Ungaro explains: “Swirl a blending brush into the eye shadow, tap off any excess and then apply to the lid in a circular motion, diffusing the shadow across your eyelid and up to your brow bone. Then, brush lightly underneath near your lower lash line.”

Don’t use liner on your top lid.

Lining your top lid may take away from the softness of the eye shadow and create a look that’s too harsh. Instead, Vanessa suggests using liner on the water line or upper tight line. “Apply liner inside of your top water line with a black eyeliner to create definition near the lashes and then use a volumizing mascara,” she explains. If you feel like black liner is still too dramatic for your look, opt for charcoal gray instead.

It is possible to match your lipstick to your eye shadow as long as you keep the look chic and simple.
