Could a Different Cologne Help Your Wounds Heal Faster?

Get a whiff of this. Scientists have discovered that your skin can smell things, just like your nose—and the smell of sandalwood can even help your largest organ recover from wounds.

"Skin cells possess olfactory receptors" said Dr. Hans Hatt of Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Germany, whose study was recently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. “Activation of the sandalwood receptor leads to greater cell proliferation and quicker migration of skin cells, which is important for wound healing and skin regeneration. The concept that the skin contains olfactory receptors could potentially revolutionize the fields of medicine, cosmetics, and essential oils.”

And while lighting a candle or spritzing on some cologne isn’t going to anyone regrow a limb, there’s no doubt the calming smell will ease the mental anguish of cutting yourself shaving—and separate studies have shown that a good state of mind can also improve the healing process. Ready to try it out? Check out these five sandalwood scented products that’ll have you up to speed in a sniff:

One of the best ways to keep the healing fumes around is a little of Odin’s 11 Semma (seen above), which counts sandalwood as a base note, spritzed onto your neck, wrist, or splashed behind your ears.
