Climb a Mountain in 30-Minutes at Rise Nation

Many fitness classes boast that they are “the celebrity workout of the moment.” Though this might actually be true for some, I’ve never taken one that actually left me feeling like I could walk out with a celeb body — until I visited Rise Nation in Los Angeles.

The Workout: Created by celebrity trainer Jason Walsh (clients include Jessica Biel, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, to name a few), Rise Nation consists of a 30-minute workout on a machine called a Versa Climber that simulates climbing a mountain.

The Space: The classes are taught in a space that mimics a nightclub. Once class begins the shades go down, the lights go off and the colored lights start dancing on the ceiling to remixes of hit songs to get you in the zone. Once you’ve finished you can go your merry (and very fit) way or head on over to the outdoor patio to grab a recovery smoothie and chat with your fellow classmates about how awesome you both are for surviving the class.

How it Works: Think of the Versa Climber as a spin bike meets a stair climber. The benefit of a Versa Climber is that your body is upright and therefore closer to its natural alignment while working out, preventing many common injuries. Thanks to a resistance knob and a series of sprints during the class, you’re guaranteed to sweat.

Unlike many of the trendy, quickie workouts popping up, you will finish this in 30 minutes knowing you gave your all. To be honest, the thought of doing more than 30 minutes will send you running out the door (though it wouldn’t burn nearly as many calories). After just nine minutes on the machine you’ll be thinking, “There is no way I can do this again.” By 15 minutes, “I can’t believe I’ve made it this far.” And by the end: ”When can I sign up next?”
