Ciara stunned on the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala, wearing a futuristic look indebted to the retro style of the 1920s. Her nude dress bucked the bodycon trend of the last few years that became a hallmark on this event’s red carpet, opting instead for a shape that invokes The Great Gatsby and flappers. Paired with it, for a taste of the future of vintage, is a silver wig styled with finger waves.

Makeup artist Yolonda Frederick created a timeless beauty look to pair with the gown, which she describes as a “modern and sultry but clean reflective look.”

They eyes are the key to Ciara’s look, for Frederick, and she began with H&M Beauty Specialist Pencil in Chocolate Brown to fill in her brows. Her eyelids were primed with H&M Beauty Colour Essence Eye Cream in Sirocco, followed by a smudging of H&M Beauty Colour Essence Eye Pencil in Celestial into the bottom and top lash lines. “Since her hairstyle is a neoclassical rendition of the 20’s finger waves, the smokey eye choice was a must!” Frederick says. To create that drama she used H&M Beauty Eyeshadow Palette in Smoky Nudes to make a winged eye and layered on H&M Beauty High Impact Eye Colour in Sun Worship and Let It Shine for high drama. She topped it off with H&M Beauty Control Chic Mascara in Deep Black.

“I chose to subscribe to a more edgy makeup choice but still remain somewhat authentic to the classic inspiration for the overall artistic direction of the entire look,” Frederick says of building the rest of Ciara’s makeup style. She attained it by applying H&M Beauty All Day Liquid Foundation in Amber and Ebony to Ciara’s complexion, then highlighted her under eye area with H&M Beauty Medium-to-Dark Custom Concealer Trio. Her cheeks got H&M Beauty Pure Velvet Cream Blusher in Cameo Brown and a highlight for radiance to all of the high points of her face with H&M Beauty Highlight-To-Go Highlighter Stick in Imperial Topaz.

“With the drama of all the other elements to this look, I chose to do a more muted but cool-toned lip colour along with a beautiful bronzed finish to the rest of the face,” Frederick explains, telling us she contoured Ciara’s lip line with H&M Beauty Cream Lip Colour in So Cocoa and then layered on Seashell and a splash of Peach Fuzz for some highlight. She added just a tiny touch of H&M Beauty Pure Lustre Gloss in Hollywood Muse for a final touch.
