Chemists Just Discovered a Peptide That's Going to Make Your Hair Smell A Lot Better

If you love the way your shampoo smells but hate that it sort of ends in the shower, you're going to be all ears (or nose?) for this new chemistry discovery.

As reported in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, a team of chemists have found a peptide that they think will help scent stay on your hair longer (as in beyond the bottle, beyond when you wash it). Pointing to the fact that many people select shampoo based on fragrance—but the fragrance doesn't really last on your strands—this discovery would actually "bind" to your hair, giving it a scent that could stick around for up to 24 hours after shampooing.

According to Science Daily, "The group identified a cyclic peptide that could bind to hair under shampooing conditions, which meant a low pH and in the presence of surfactants. Then, the peptide was connected to the two popular delivery systems: a microcapsule and a profragrance model polymer. They found that the peptide efficiently deposits both types of systems to hair. The researchers say that for the polymer and microcapsule tests, those that were bound to a peptide were loaded about 5 and 20 times more efficiently, respectively, onto hair than those that lacked a peptide."

Peptide power for the win.
