Caitlyn Jenner and MAC Just Raised Millions for Transgender Organizations

While Caitlyn Jenner may have made statements that have caused a bit of controversy in the trans community, she has done a lot for that community. In addition to the unprecedented amount of public attention she’s brought to the community, the reality star has also raised $1.3 million for trans organizations this year through a partnership with MAC Cosmetics.

On Friday, Jenner’s birthday, MAC posted the milestone to Instagram. “Happy birthday to our friend and collaborator @CaitlynJenner!” they wrote. “We are so proud of the impact made by her Finally Free lipstick for the M·A·C Transgender Initiative! All $1.3 million is going towards #trans organizations around the United States like @glaad, @LGBTcenternyc, and @lalgbtcenter to enhance access to healthcare, economic empowerment and civil rights.” And that’s a lot of money!

Back in February, Jenner and MAC announced a rose shade of lipstick called Finally free that championed “all ages, all races and all sexes,” with 100% of the selling price going towards MAC’s AIDS Fund Transgender Initiative. At $17 a tube that breaks down to over 75,000 in sales since being made available in April. That’s a hell of a number for Jenner to hit on her first cosmetic product and a pretty sizable investment from MAC as the company is eating the cost to produce the shade.

“Transgender people have had unprecedented visibility in the last few years, but it hasn’t always benefitted trans people, particularly those most in need,” Jenner said in a release. “With Mac, I’ve found a partner that demonstrates a real commitment to the funding of transgender specific organizations and projects . I’ve been granted an extraordinary platform, one built upon the work of countless, and too often nameless, trans people who came before me.”

And Jenner is right, trans people are becoming increasingly visible. Just this week Elle Brazil tapped their second trans gender cover model ever with Valentina Sampaio. In addition, the personalities like Andreja Pejic, Ashley Laith, Laverne Cox, and Hari Nef have all risen to prominence. This approach by Jenner sees that visibility directly benefiting trans individuals outside of fame.

This inclusive effort is, of course, nothing new for MAC. IN the past they put all of the proceeds of products like their Viva Glam Lipsticks toward fighting HIV and AIDS around the world. It’s so amazing to see how powerful something as simple as purchasing lipstick can be.
