The Oregon Police Department is investigating the collapse of “Duckbill,” an iconic coastline rock formation in the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area.

The collapse was initially believed to have occurred naturally. On Sept. 1, the Oregon State Parks Facebook page shared a post memorializing Duckbill, saying that it was fortunate that no one was injured and that the incident should serve as “as a sobering reminder of the ever present dangers of our fragile coastal rocks and cliffs.”

Since then, however, drone footage posted on Twitter has revealed that a group of vandals gathered around the structure and purposefully tore it down. Because people are awful!

Nineteen-year-old park visitor David Kalas and his friends witnessed and recorded the incident. They told NBC News that they confronted the boys once they saw them topple the iconic formation. According to him, the boys responded by saying that one of their friends had broken his leg on it, so “they did a favor by knocking the rock down.”

In a statement released Monday, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department spokesman Chris Havel said that they are investigating the situation, and that breaking park rules can carry a minimum fine of $435.

Social media users have since been posting their favorite images of the landmark, which took thousands of years to form, under the hashtag #RIPThatPNWRock.
