Some good news: A-plus Instagram follow Britney Spears is now also on Snapchat — and her Instagram followers were the first to find out about the very millennial social media move. Spears posted a video of herself doing the back and forth nod that any Kylie Jenner fan will recognize. Her reason for joining the app? The filter potential. “A little late on Snapchat… my kids showed me last week,” she captioned her video. “It’s great because it makes you feel pretty!”

A little late on Snapchat… my kids showed me last week ???? It's great because it makes you feel pretty!

But here’s the bad news: Although Snapchat even has a filter nicknamed “the pretty filter,” studies have pointed out that social media can actually lower your self-esteem. One such report, highlighted by Time magazine, found that the more time female college students spent on Facebook, the more likely they were to associate self-worth with appearance.

A 2011 study even links exposure to edited photos with a higher rate of eating disorders. It’s also been suggested that some filters lighten skin, promoting false standards of beauty. Still, as of last year, Snapchat had more active daily users than Twitter.

But just because social media has cons doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow Spears. She shares stories about her Las Vegas show and photos of her family vacations, and she even gets in on the meme game. Can you imagine having this much access to Spears in the ’00s?

True story ????

Plus, if one of the most iconic pop stars in the world uses social media to feel pretty, that helps us feel a little less guilty about swiping on dog ears before we send a snap. If a digital flower crown helps you get through the day, we say swipe right.
