Blake Lively has just officially signed onto her first major film since having her second child last fall, in a role that's about as far from Serena van der Woodsen as you can get. Deadline reports Lively has joined Bruised, a mixed marital arts action-drama directed by The Notebook's Nick Cassavetes.
Lively will star as Jackie, who, according to Deadline, is "a single mother working two jobs and a disgraced MMA fighter who has been up against the ropes her entire life. When the authorities threaten to take her young son away from her, she must get back in the cage for one last chance to fight for redemption and give her son the life she always wanted."
Lively hinted this role was coming in her interview with Variety last month. "I'm about to do a movie in a couple months where I'm playing a woman who is a fighter," she said. When asked if she started boxing, she replied no. "I'm not there yet. I'm getting my back strong." That said, the training isn't as intense as what she went through for The Shallows, she added. "I'm not ready to go work out like that again."
When considering roles generally, Lively says she looks "for interesting women. It can be a woman in every frame of the movie or it could be a woman that's in one scene, but I look for characters that I connect with," she said. "Having a family and having worked on a show for six years, it really made me want to do work that I love. And it leads to greater success, which only means more opportunity to do that again."
