How to Create Waves with a Hair Straightener

Bended waves. The most perfect, naturally undone, effortless wave style there is. The only issue? For most of the population, the style that’s meant to look so natural doesn’t happen naturally at all. In fact, if you don’t know what you’re doing, it can turn into a very effortful undertaking (to which anyone who’s attempted this look with a curling iron can attest). Luckily, the pros behind celeb hairstylist Jen Atkin’s website Mane Addicts know exactly what they’re doing, and they let us in on the optimum technique.

Check out the instructions below and watch the video above to see how it’s done!

1. The best way to achieve this look is to work in layers. So separate your hair, and clip up the top section.

2. Working in about two-inch sections, begin adding bends to your hair using a one-inch flatiron (like the Glampalm 1-Inch Volumizer Ceramic Hair Volumizing Iron we used). Hold the iron horizontally as you roll it under toward your head. Then, without removing the iron, roll it the opposite direction (out and away from your face). And then, roll it under once more—all in one fluid motion.

3. Repeat step two on the rest of your hair. Continue to work in sections, releasing a new portion of hair from the clip as you go. If you have layers, you may not be able to get three bends in on each section—that’s okay. If any pieces come out looking spiky or overly curled, just smooth over them with the iron.

4. Once you’ve finished both sides, lightly brush through your bends to blend them all together. If your hair needs a little extra help to hold curl, spritz some of L’Oréal’s Elnett Satin Hairspray.
