“Whenever we collaborate, I really let him lead,” says photographer Guy Aroch of makeup guru Dick Page. “There’s a lot to learn from a guy like that.” After all, Page, a 30-plus year industry veteran known for his artist’s eye (photography is his preferred hobby) is constantly in-demand and frequently on the move, jetting between fashion shows, top-tier editorial gigs, and his role as artistic director of makeup at Shiseido. So it was serendipitous that the stars aligned to bring Page, Aroch, and stylist Elizabeth Sulcer to Greenpoint, Brooklyn at the same time for this VIOLET GREY exclusive. “Dick has a huge following; I’d brought up the idea of working together but the timing was never right,” Aroch explains. “So when the opportunity presented itself I just jumped on it.”

Page, a natural storyteller, found his muse for the project in a hybrid “Natalie Portman in The Professional meets Princess Gloria Von Thurn und Taxis” he says. Adds Aroch, “Dick had the idea to bring these two characters together, seeing what that would look like today. There were a lot of jewels, and a lot of decadence.” And also, as Page describes, “A gamine French kind of thing.” Pittsburgh-born model Jillian Payne—a ringer for early-career Portman—was handpicked by Page to help bring his punk princess/teen assassin to life. “It’s not seasonal,” Page says of the beauty look he created for her. “The looks kind of morph. The lip will come and go, the eyes come and go, but the brows are constant.” Besides the blunt, Professional-esque hair (courtesy of Tomi Komo) and strong arches, the most distinctive elements to this Page work are the the aforementioned dramatically-shaded eyes, achieved with myriad Shiseido cream shadows and the artist’s Titian-level blending skills. “The makeup is special in its simplicity,” Aroch says of Page’s trademark style. “He’s so intuitive—he’s literally painting a face and does it in three minutes.” Professional, indeed.
