ClassPass Founder Payal Kadakia on a Gorgeous New Year

Payal Kadakia knows balance— mental and physical. Perched on an office exercise ball on a recent snowy afternoon, she chats with fervor about ClassPass— her startup that gives members access to thousands of boutique fitness studios across the country— her recent travels, and her love for green tea. No task or topic is off-limits. ”It’s hard to learn how to prioritize, but it’s essential for our company to succeed,” she tells us, stretching her toned limbs.

Multitasking is second nature to this MIT grad, former Bain consultant, and lifelong dancer (she founded and continues to train with The Sa Dance Company, a classical Indian troupe). And helping others reach their goals is the core of her business; at only $99 per month, ClassPass memberships are singlehandedly revolutionizing how, where, and when we exercise. “I love meeting our users and partners and talking to them about how ClassPass has made an impact,” says Kadakia, who squeezes in midday workout classes between meetings.

Here, Kadakia chats with us about her daily schedule, New Year’s resolutions, and favorite winter beauty picks.

How did your dance experiences inspire you to launch ClassPass?

Dance has always been the center of who I am. It has given me the inspiration to help other people find a hobby, passion, and activity that fulfills them. It also taught me some of the many skills I need as an entrepreneur: a hard work ethic that takes practice to master and the confidence to persevere through any challenges.

What’s your daily routine like?

Every day is quite unique, which is one of my favorite things! I travel pretty frequently, but a few things that are routine are going for a run, getting my green tea in the morning, and checking email… well, all the time! I’m usually taking calls with my investors/advisors, and then spend the rest of the day in meetings with my team, our studio owners, or meeting new folks who we may be adding to the team. I’ll sometimes skip out to a class during the day (where I love meeting ClassPass users and hearing their feedback). My evenings vary, but when I’m in New York, I love checking email while watching some TV and hanging out with my boyfriend. Even busy entrepreneurs need some “Scandal” in their lives.

How do you work fitness into your daily life now?

I aim to start my day with a quick run. I wear leggings almost every day (a really great work perk that our employees love!), and I plan my workouts before the week begins. I try to also have a ‘Plan A’ and ‘Plan B,’ in case I get busy, and need to fit in a class between meetings. And when time permits or we have an upcoming showcase, I love rehearsing with my dance company!

Do you wear makeup to fitness classes? If yes, what kind?

I usually put on eyeliner first thing in the morning (and it’s the last thing I take off), so it’s usually on me in class— but that’s about it! I also love dry shampoo after a good workout.

What does your winter beauty routine look like?

I swear by vaseline for my lips— especially during the winter. Clearasil Rapid Action pads are my go-to make-up removers every night and post-class. But my key beauty routine is water— lots of it. It’s so important to keep yourself hydrated.

What are some beauty products you can’t live without?

You’ll always find me with Revlon Color Stay Eyeliner— I’ve probably used this since I was 7 years old! I also love Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks to add a little color and sparkle.

Who are your beauty and style icons?

I’ve always loved Eva Longoria's style given her petite frame (I'm 4' 11'!). I'm also a fan of Jennifer Lopez, who has always found a way to keep her performer- and dancer-esque style alive, while keeping her skin and makeup natural.

Who are your role models?

Oprah Winfrey (I’ve always loved motivational quotes), Alvin Ailey (he’s helped share his culture through movement), and Steve Jobs (he’s a visionary who ultimately changed people’s lives).

Any new year’s resolutions?

  • Help and mentor other entrepreneurs more regularly!

  • Don’t check my phone in the middle of the night!

  • Perform with my dance company at least once a month.

What’s your advice for women who want to be entrepreneurs?

Don’t wait! Start being an entrepreneur today. The best way to learn how to start a company and make your dreams come true is to simply begin creating and making a difference. You’ll be amazed at what you can— and will!— accomplish when you try.
