Beauty at Cannes: From Lupita Nyong’o to Zoë Kravitz

Celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose had a busy week in the south of France – he was responsible for creating not one, but three standout red carpet beauty looks at the 68th Annual Cannes Film Festival. Barose has created all of Lupita Nyong’o’s bold looks since the beginning of her career and for this year’s festival, he also added Zoe Kravitz, and up-and-coming actress (and new face of Louis Vuitton) Alicia Vikander to his client roster.
“If there’s one thing in common with these looks, it’s skin. Skin is always in,” says Barose. “Especially in Cannes, you want to show off your skin even when you’re going for drama.” We talked to Barose about his inspiration for the three looks he created, and how to recreate the looks at home.

"Clashing color with makeup and dress is a way to keep a look fun and fresh,” says Barose of Nyong’o’s regal purple lip paired with a stunning green Gucci Couture gown. “It can’t be about red lipsticks all the time, as it gets too serious.” He started by getting her skin fresh and glowing with Lancôme Advanced Genifique Serum and applying a mattifying primer to her t-zone. To even out Nyong’o’s complexion, Barose used Lancôme’s new Miracle Cushion Foundation in 500 Suede. This new foundation utilizes the cushion compact technology coming out of Korea and gives skin a dewy, hydrated look.
Inspired by classic, 1940s movie stars, Barose gave the actress a thick, dramatic look using Lancôme Brow Tint in Noir to fill in and elongate her brows. Of course, the focus of this look was on the lips. He layered two shades to get that rich, purple color: Lancôme Color Design in Hit List and Shine Lover Lipstick in 373 Palpitante.

“We wanted the makeup to look bronzy and ethereal to compliment her white Valentino couture gown,” says Barose of the bronze goddess look he created for Kravitz at the Mad Max premiere. On her skin, her used a warm tone liquid foundation and enhanced the glow using DiorSkin NudeTan Healthy Glow powder bronzer. For the eyes, it was all about a metallic smokey look. Barose applied the shadow wet to keep it more metallic and used a mix of bronze shades from Dior’s 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 30 Avenue Montaigne. To make the shadow last, Barose mixed in Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal before applying to lids.
“Zoë has gorgeous, full lips already, so I simply enhanced them with a shimmery, golden nude glose,” says Barose. He used DiorAddict Lip Maximizer High volume Lip Plumper in Beige Sunrise.

"To compliment her olive green Louis Vuitton dress and her tan skin, I wanted the make up to look brighten and fresh,” says Barose. “It’s nude but polished and elegant.” Barose started by enhancing Vikander’s tan skin with a sheer tinted moisturizer that was a shade darker than her skin. He blended it all over her face to keep it sheer enough for her natural tan to peek through. Using DiorSkin Nude Tan Tie Dye Edition Blush in Coral Sunset on the apples of cheeks and up towards her temples helped to bring out more of her natural tan.
On lips, Barose mimicked Vikander’s natural, rosy lip color using Rouge Dior Baume in 468 Spring. When it came to her eyes, he used the Dior Eye Reviver Palette to create slight definition that felt light and airy.
