Telluride Film Festival: Muted Beauty and Powerful Films Rule

Film festivals stereotypically consist of black tie red carpets with blinding cameras at every angle, but at Colorado’s Telluride Film Festival this past weekend, cameras were kept to a minimum — even in the midst of big stars like Meryl Streep, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, and Kate Winslet. Consequently, instead of mega-glam hair and makeup and couture gowns, these Hollywood actresses donned jeans and barely any makeup. With powerful films like Suffragette, a period drama about the early 20th century women’s movement, Carol, a ‘50s period drama about the love between two women, and He Named Me Malala, a documentary about Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, the cast and crew were letting their work do the talking.

Streep, Mara, and Winslet casually pulled their hair back while keeping their makeup nude. McAdams’ angular bob was softened by flushed pink lips and cheeks. Festival director Julie Huntsinger, actress Brie Larson, and actress Elisabeth Shue all kept their light tresses low maintenance, while wrapping up in muted jackets.

“I’m so tired of hearing about female empowerment,” Streep told a Deadline reporter at the Festival. “I just want women to be included.”
