After Kids, Fitness Guru David Kirsch Changed Everything

When it comes to fitness, Kate Upton, Liv Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez all rely on wellness expert David Kirsch. I love David and appreciate his simple and direct approach to food and fitness. He really knows what works. After the birth of his two daughters eight years ago, David had to tweak his perfect formula. The experience of being a single dad of two with a busy career meant his strict approach to health needed to shift. “My priorities have changed,” David writes in his new book Ultimate Family Wellness. “Sleepless nights, challenges at work, and carving out ‘me time’ is increasingly difficult. Quite simply as a single father I needed to get my workouts on the fly.”

David’s new approach is all about staying fit and healthy, but doing it when you literally have no time to work out. His 5-5-5 program is all about learning 5 moves in five days to lose five pounds. Because he often works with clients who have the pressure of a red carpet event or a TV interview, he is an expert on transforming bodies in a short period of time. The book focuses on how to incorporate fitness into your life with kids. How to get exercise with your kids, rather than having it be something you do separately. It’s also full of healthy recipes your children will like too. Here are a few of my favorites:

Tuna Spinach Bowl

Rethink tuna with this five-minute delicious meal. Serves two.

  • 8 ounces (225 grams) baby spinach

  • 1 jar Italian tuna (6.7 ounces [190 grams)

  • 1 cup (150 grams) cherry tomatoes, halved

  • 1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted, and cubed

  • 1⁄4 cup (36 grams) toasted almonds, coarsely chopped

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Wash the spinach and while still damp place in pan over medium heat until just wilted. Turn off the heat and toss remaining ingredients into sauté pan. Mix together and serve.

Vegan Berry Smoothie

This antioxidant-rich vegan powerhouse has the added benefits of magnesium, omega fatty acids, and protein from the hemp seeds. Serves one.

  • 1 cup (235 milliliters) almond milk

  • 4 frozen strawberries

  • 4 frozen raspberries

  • 4 frozen blueberries

  • 1 tablespoon (7 grams) hemp seeds

  • 3 or 4 ice cubes, to taste

Crunchy Lettuce Tofu Tacos

To all my vegetarians out there, here is tofu with a Mexican twist. We love it in crunchy lettuce leaves, but it’s also perfect in a low-carb, whole-wheat wrap. Enjoy these for breakfast, lunch, or a snack. Serves two.

  • Grapeseed oil spray

  • 1 small yellow onion, peeled and chopped

  • 6 ounces (170 grams) firm tofu, drained and crumbled

  • 2 tablespoons Tomato-Watermelon Salsa

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 4 large lettuce leaves, preferably iceberg, washed and dried

  • 1⁄2 ripe avocado, peeled and sliced

Spray grapeseed oil spray in a skillet and sauté the onions over medium-high heat, stirring to prevent sticking or burning. When the onions start to color, stir in crumbled tofu. Cook for two minutes.

Turn off heat, stir in the salsa, and season with salt and pepper.

Arrange two lettuce leaves on each plate. Divide the tofu mixture on top of the four lettuce leaves and top with sliced avocado. Roll up the lettuce leaves around the mixture.
