This 9-year-old girl is helping homeless women in a seriously amazing way

Imagine being able to recognize and harness your individual brand of girl power—while you’re still in grade school. Combine that ability with a huge heart and compassion for the homeless and you’ll have the core of what 9-year-old Khloe Thompson embodies. The sweet-faced, inspirational girl from Southern California founded KhloeKares, a charity that donates toiletries to homeless women. As if that gesture wasn’t thoughtful enough, Khloe enlisted the help of her grandmother to sew homemade handbags called “Kare Bags” to deliver the goods, which include everything from toothpaste, soap feminine products to blankets, shirts and scarves.

Demonstrating her keen sense of awareness, Thompson’s inspiration for KhloeKares came from witnessing the plight of homeless women in her neighborhood.

“Sometimes they give me hugs, sometimes they say ‘God bless you,’ and then they say ‘Thank you,’ or they’ll do just all of those three,” she said.

While Khloe is certainly spreading meaningful lessons on caring, sharing and supporting members of the frequently stigmatized homeless community, one of her biggest teaching moments took place closer to home, when her mother Alisha initially expressed concerns about her daughter’s safety.

“Just as a parent you’re going to be concerned about her walking up to random strangers,” she said. “Thankfully Khloe has something about her where people really warm up to her quickly.”

Not to be deterred by her desire to help, Khloe has some simple advice. “Don’t be so afraid of them,” she said. “They’re just a normal person like you.”
