Have you ever been in a rush and accidentally used a black eyeliner pencil to fill in your brows? It happened to me once, and it wasn’t pretty.

That was when I decided not to store my brow pencils in the same container as my eyeliners. Truth be told, I probably reorganize my makeup way too often, but I do find it therapeutic. It’s the perfect opportunity to get rid of all the unused, expired, and unloved products that have been taking up space. Plus, it makes getting ready in the morning so much faster.

Here are five tips to keep your makeup organized so you can avoid my awkward eyeliner-browliner situation.

Create an “essentials” tray

This, of course, depends on how large your makeup collection is. If you’re anything like me and have a lot of makeup, do what I do, and keep all of your essentials and daily staples on one tray. This way, you’ll have your most-used and loved products stored in one place where they’re easily accessible.

Use drawers with dividers

Using dividers is a perfect solution for clustering products together. I keep my makeup organized by category: concealer, bronzers, blushes, etc. If you don’t have drawers, then I highly recommend using one of the acrylic makeup organizers. There are many places you can find them online, but you can also get your hands on them in places like home goods discount stores, if you’re lucky.

Use candle jars

I probably have about 10 of these and use each one to store different things. Empty candle jars are perfect for storing mascaras, lip liners, eyeliners, eye pencils, and makeup brushes. It makes things way more accessible on rushed mornings, and you won’t have to dig through a bottomless makeup bag to find the right brush.

Keep the products visible

Out of sight, out of mind, right? You’d be surprised how many products just sit in your beauty corner forgotten. When it comes to lipsticks, especially ones that are packaged, like MAC, where you can’t see the color until you remove the cap, storing them upside down is something that really helps me out. This is a huge timesaver since it lets you find the shade you need quicker, without having to rummage through your entire collection. For products where you can see the shade, like nail polishes, store them in a clear container like a cookie jar.

Use cake stands

Alternatively, group your nail polishes according to color, and display them on a cake stand for an accessible and cute display piece. Pretty perfume bottles also display beautifully on this.

When it comes to storing things like nail polishes and perfumes, keep in my mind that they need to be stored in a dry and cool place, so avoid storing them in your bathroom.
