13 DIY Hummus Recipes That Are Way Better Than the Store-Bought Stuff

I have a bone to pick with store-bought hummus. In my opinion, it never tastes quite right. For reasons beyond my comprehension, it's always a little bit too sour, or stale, or bland—which are all things that hummus should definitely not be. I do get the appeal of the store-bought stuff: You can usually buy an entire tub for less than $7, and it's a great quick high-protein snack option when you're in a pinch. But if you're not in a pinch, there's really no reason you shouldn't be making your own hummus.

Allow me to persuade you. If you've never tried making the spread yourself, you might think it's a complicated and potentially expensive process. But actually, it's super easy and requires only a handful of ingredients like chickpeas, olive oil, and salt (all things you probably already have in your pantry). The only additional thing you might have to spring for is tahini, but a jar of that will last you a pretty long time, so it's a worthwhile investment. From there all you have to do is blend everything together. You don't even need a food processor—a regular blender will work just fine. (A food processor does allow you to get a creamier consistency, but if you don't have one, it's nbd.)

As the Barefoot Contessa would say, how easy is that?

Plus, it's really fun to experiment with hummus flavors. If you don't have chickpeas, you can easily sub in black beans or any other kind of bean you might have (heck, even edamame works!). And the sky's the limit when it comes to the spices and condiments you can throw in. It's almost impossible to go wrong.

Finally, hummus you make at home is almost always going to taste better than what you'd buy at the supermarket. But you won't know until you try. These 13 recipes are a great place to begin your homemade hummus adventure.
