Watch A Classic Porsche Race From Last To First In 12 Laps

Porsche restorer/collector Bruce Canepa doesn’t let his cars gather dust in a garage. Many weekends a year, Canepa takes his million-dollar classics to the track, including one of his favorites, a 1979 Porsche 935 that he raced professionally in the ‘80s. With 750 hp from its screaming twin-turbo flat six, the 935 was the last of its kind built by Porsche.

Two weeks ago, during his annual foray with the Porsche at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Canepa’s gearbox failed, forcing him to start last in the final race in a 34-car field of other racing Porsches, BMWs, Corvettes and similar monsters of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Classics racing sometimes gets written off as not a truly competitive event, but the video shot by Canepa and his team shows just how hard the racing can be — and what’s its like to go from worst to first from the driver’s seat.
