Report: Ford Will Debut the Next-Generation Mustang Two Years Ahead of Schedule

From Road & Track

The new Chevrolet Camaro is spectacular. In our last comparison between the Camaro SS and the Ford Mustang GT, we came away incredibly impressed, saying "there's no doubt the Camaro, with its Cadillac platform and Corvette engine, is the thoroughbred of its class." With such stiff competition from Chevrolet, it appears Ford may be moving up production of the seventh-generation Mustang.

Originally posted on the Mustang6G forum, this document shows Ford changing the production date from 2022 to 2020.

While it's clearly still a rumor at this point, it makes sense. The Mustang's sales haven't taken a nose dive, but it's not enjoying the same lead over the Camaro that it did last year. For the month of January, Mustang sales are down 12.8 percent compared to last year, while Camaro sales are up 11.2 percent.

We're sure Ford would appreciate it if the Camaro wasn't selling so well, but if this rumor is true, it's great news for Mustang fans. Who wants to wait until 2022 when you could get a new Mustang in 2020?
