June Just Made A Terrible, Selfish Mistake on 'The Handmaid's Tale'

[Spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale season 3, episodes 7,"Under His Eye," ahead.]

Let's start this post with a little lesson. If you don't already know, when we entertainment writers mention a "filler episode," we're talking about this week's episode of The Handmaid's Tale. Okay, really, it's an episode of TV where essentially nothing happens. Its purpose is either just filling up space (it's in the name)-like when a show has 22 episodes to fill but only needs 20 to get where it's going-or it needs to give the viewer a mental break after a particularly harrowing couple of episodes...and throw in some key details that don't fit anywhere else. "Under His Eye" is the latter.

Like most filler episodes, you could probably skip this one all together if you want to, in favor of just watching the "previously on" mini-recap before next week's. Here's what it will probably tell you:

  • June tried to visit her daughter at school, after gaining some crucial info from a Martha. It doesn't work. Hannah and her "family" has moved away, thanks to June.

  • June is big mad at Ofmatthew, her new walking partner who ratted out said Martha and got her killed in a salvaging.

  • Commander Fred is trying to create an extradition treaty with Canada. You know, so Gilead can take back certain people who escape. That would be very bad.

  • He is leaving Nicole there as political leverage for now. Serena Joy doesn't know that part.

That's it. I guess you could watch Serena and Fred waltz for, like, ten minutes if that's your thing.

Snark aside, June needs to focus. Right now, June's the only person she can trust, but she's also her own worst enemy. (This is about to be very clear to all of you, but I am not a mother.) The way I see it, June needs to forget about Hannah for now (see, told you, not a mother). It's time for that leader we've been promised since the beginning of this series to rise. Take down Gilead, and she can get her daughter back, it's simply not going to happen before then, especially now that Hannah is in the wind.

What did June hope to accomplish with this visit? It was selfish and the only thing June managed to achieve was getting another Martha killed. For what? I don't know, and I don't think June does either. It's time to get her head back in the game.
