Jenna Bush Hager Explains How Her Daughter’s Name Has a Special Tie to George H.W. Bush
Jenna Bush Hager shared a heartwarming Instagram post for her daughter Poppy’s fifth birthday last week.
The Today host said Poppy is named after George H.W. Bush.
George H.W. Bush went by the name Poppy during his childhood.
Jenna Bush Hager is celebrating a very special birthday this month: The Today with Hoda & Jenna star’s daughter Poppy turned five on August 13. To honor her youngest daughter on her special day, Jenna shared the sweetest Instagram post for Poppy featuring a carousel of adorable pictures.
Jenna also gave a shout-out to her late grandfather George H.W. Bush, whom Poppy is actually named after. “Happiest Birthday to our darling Pops! You light up our lives. Like your namesake your kindness amazes and you make us laugh like no one else. How wonderful life is since you’re in our world! Five years of pops!” she wrote in the caption.
Fans could not get over the sweet connection between the two. “Happy Birthday Poppy! I’m always amazed at how much she looks like her grandfather!❤️,” one fan wrote. “Omg that last pic—looks just like her grand pop,” another added.

When Poppy was born in 2015, Jenna revealed in an Instagram post she would be naming her second daughter after her late grandfather. “Welcome to the WORLD Poppy Louise Hager—named after my darling Gamps who went by Poppy during his childhood. We are in LOVE,” Jenna wrote in an Instagram post.
George had an emotional reaction after he learned his granddaughter would be named after him. “He was not expecting it, so he cried,” Jenna said on Today. “And of course, I cry at like Teacher Appreciation Day commercials (so) I’m, like, crying over the baby and Henry’s kind of like wiping the baby’s face off because there’s like tears in the baby’s mouth.”

When George passed away on November 30, 2018, Jenna shared an Instagram post about how happy she was that her kids got to grow up with her grandfather alongside sweet pictures of their family.
“What a gift that my girls got to know our Gampy. What an honor that we could name our Poppy after such a principled, humble, kind man who we all loved fiercely and who loved us back,” she wrote. “I read this letter—he wrote us—with new eyes: Remember the old song? ‘I’ll be there, ready when you are?’ Well, I’ll be there, ready when you are. And if you need me, I’m here. Devotedly, Dad.”
It looks like Poppy will always have a special connection to her great-grandfather. Happy fifth birthday, Poppy!
