Woman shares old footage of Alex Trebek confirming a wild family legend: ‘It’s really embarrassing’

A woman’s 2016 cell phone video showing Alex Trebek confirming one of her family’s most famous passed-down stories is going viral on TikTok.

The anonymous woman first uploaded the clip on YouTube on Nov. 8, 2020, to little fanfare from viewers. However, a TikTok user by the name Cornelius re-shared the video on March 8, where it has since been viewed over 2.1 million times.

In the video, the woman asks Trebek outside of a Washington, D.C. venue about a story involving the late Jeopardy! host that was shared widely amongst her family for decades.

“I was actually hoping you could settle some familial lore,” the woman behind the cell phone camera asks Trebek. “My father said that you lived in the basement of his aunt’s house in Ottawa when you were quite young. He has contended this for 20 years, and now today, when I confronted him about it, he said, ‘Well, I’m pretty sure I didn’t make it up.'”

The crowd surrounding Trebek laughs at the question, while the woman rattles off the name of her relative, Mary Clayman, as well as the address she allegedly co-inhabited with the host on Sherway Drive in Ottawa, Canada.

After thinking for a moment, Trebek replies, “And I dated her daughter, Norma Clayman.”

The room burst out in applause, while the woman filming concedes, “I owe my dad a beer.”

Trebek then goes on to describe more details about the time he spent living with the family.

“They were a lovely Jewish family, and Norma was a beautiful young lady,” he says. “And we were dating and we were serious for quite a while. And her older sister, Shirley — lovely woman — works for the government.”

The woman confirms Trebek’s account was completely correct — down to the details he remembered about Norma’s father, Izzy, and his stomach problems.

“Call your dad and say, ‘You were right, and Alex attests,'” he jokes. “It’s really embarrassing when you’re wandering into new cities and someone comes up and says, ‘You dated my mother!'”

Fans of the host were blown away by the story, as well as how much detail the legendary host was able to provide about the woman’s family members.

“He didn’t just answer he even added to the story,” one user wrote.

“So awesome,” said another. “He was part of everybody’s family. Some literally some figuratively.”

“I thought he was just going to play along … didn’t think it’d be true!” wrote a third. “That’s crazy!”
