People are not impressed with Donald Trump's tribute to 9/11

Today marks 17 years since the terror attack that killed 2,977 innocent people in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania.

On the morning of September 11th, 2001, 19 hijackers boarded four commercial planes before diverting them off track. Two crashed into the twin towers, another crashed into the Pentagon, while the fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after the passengers tried to regain control of the jet from the Al Qaeda terrorists.

As the current President of the United States, it's probably assumed that Donald Trump would want to make a heartfelt statement about the attack that took so many of his citizens' lives. But, well, he came out with this:

"17 years since September 11th!" Trump wrote in a brief post to Twitter. And as you might imagine, the resounding response wasn't overwhelmingly great.

"A lot of presidents would use this day to honor the dead, rather than prove they have the ability to count," wrote one follower. "You think this tweet honors 9/11? Wow." added another.

Just for comparison's sake, here's what former President Barack Obama wrote on Twitter today regarding the anniversary of the attacks:

And this is what George W Bush, who was president at the time of 9/11, had to say:

While Trump's brief and almost dismissive post has obviously aggrieved some, others were more interested in pointing out the previous mishaps the President has had when it comes to being sensitive towards 9/11.

"And on that day, after the Twin Towers collapsed, you bragged that your building was “now the tallest in New York City.” What a cold, dark, foul place your soul must be," one person responded to Trump's 'tribute'.

"Remember when you said that you were going to donate to help the families of the WTC victims, but an audit by the NYC comptroller proved you did not even donate one cent? We remember the victims and will never forget that you shamelessly used the event for publicity. Sad!" another added.

Trump is yet to respond to any of the criticism on Twitter, however he did attend a Memorial Service in Shanksville, Pennsylvania with his wife Melania.

Our thoughts are with everyone who was affected by 9/11 17 years ago.
